In 1921, a local builder who operated a small
hardware business approached his clerk Frank J. Youngdale, offering to
sell him the business and agreeing to purchase supplies from him. Frank
bought the business and in 1922 moved it from Lander Avenue to a small
part of the present location. As other property became available ,
they purchased the bicycle shop to the east, later the harness shop to
the west and in 1963 the poultry hatchery where our cooking and laundry
displays are currently located. The rear warehouse, which had been a
blacksmith shop, was purchased in 1952.
Frank & Esther's three children - Frank C., Bill and
Mary Lou - spent their careers at Youngdale's, and now enjoy retirement
with their spouses. Third generation members, Joe Bonander and Sonia
Caldeira,
both joined the company in the early 1980's, and now these first cousins
co-own Youngdale's.
In the summer of 2001 we completed our closeout of the
hardware and house wares department. In August of 2002 we celebrated the
completion of our complete store remodel. In December, 2007 we announced
that we will close our store. We thoroughly enjoyed 86 years of business in this
great community. We thank all of the fine people who worked at Youngdale’s over
our history, and are grateful for our many wonderful customers. Many blessings
to you all!
